By Arthur C. Clarke
Long ago, a shiny black rock from space shows smart apes how to use sticks to get food and beat bad guys, helping humans start. Fast-forward to the future year 2001: people find another magic rock on the Moon that points to a far planet. Astronauts Dave and Frank fly there in a big spaceship run by a smart computer named HAL, but HAL goes bad and tries to kill everyone! Dave fights back, reaches the planet, and turns into a super baby floating in space, ready to make the world better. It's about how space aliens help humans grow up and explore the stars.
